Without a doubt, the best DVD that stars Jerry Garcia, is Shoreline Amphitheatre. A benevolant man who does not post here anymore, for reasons I still do not understand, sent me this DVD and I fuckin' love it. Sorry about the swearing, but i feel like it's accentuative right now. Based on DVD's, the relationship with Melvin Seals and Jerry is a lot visually stronger than Brent and Jerry. I am convinced that Jerry does not do solos, but rather vicariously expresses himself vocally through his external organ known as his guitar. It seems like JGB (i havent listened to much at ALL) lyrics really incorporate or correlate to Jerry's life. Almost every song i think.. BUT you can really tell in songs like "I shall be released" or any song where he talks about memories, or mistakes or the past or the future. Sad stuff, but I am so glad he left it for the world. The back up singers are great, Kahn is great, the drummer is.. substantial heh maybe bugged a bit too much early on.. and Melvin has a cool style of his own. I like that crazy dealio he did on umm..That Lucky Old Sun. Heh, he had jerry laughing. There is so much raw emotion in this DVD, i love it. Jerry cries the lyrics out, Melvin and Jerry exchange looks constantly, Jerry nods to Melvin to solo a lot, a lot of times Melvin doesn't take the chance though. Maybe he was intimidated? or just not in the groove? Anyways, my recommendation is:

IF YOU DO NOT HAVE THIS DVD, BUY IT AND WATCH IT SEVERAL TIMES CONSECUTIVELY.

An excellent DVD that gets as many or more plays than any of my Dead DVDs with the exception of Winterland and the bonus disc of the GD movie. The Shoreline performance documented on this disc is about as good as latter day Garcia Band got.

Hey there, are you guys talking about the view from the vault shorline show or a JGB shoreline show. Please excuse me for being a total noob about whats out there. I really have been living under a rock. Anyway was living in that area and saw most of the shows in the area around this time and a freind of mine recently turned me on to the Shoreline VFtV dvd show which reawakened some great memories of that tour and was wondering if there is indeed really a JGB show at Shorline from this time on DVD. I can't tell you how exciting it's been for me, after 10 years with very little Dead material, to hear and see this stuff is mind-blowing to say the least. Definatly the closest thing to a time machine that I've experienced.

Just want to say that i recently received this DVD, from the same kind soul who sent Max his copy, and i have watched only around 20 minutes so far, but what a timeless performance, i mean, i am transported, this is just lovely, just lovely stuff, and if you have the means, get this DVD! And if i can figure out how to make a copy, will try my damndest to get you a copy, though you be in Bali, or Timbuktu ... wish me success! By the way, don't recognize your username, but if you are new to the forum, welcome, if you've been around for awhile, then welcome back!

Hey thanks, yes I'm new to the forum for sure. Been reawakened by a friend who recently arrived and brought a nice collection of dvds and downloaded audio shows. In particular I've really enjoyed the view from the vault dvd series which had 2 shows that I was at and 2 I wish I was at. I recently had someone bring me over the trukin up to buffalo and winterland 78 shows and now I'm completely hooked and Jones'en for more. The DVDs really bring you right back to the moment. Unfortunately we are still in the stone age here with 33.6 internet connections so downloads are hard to come by and we rely on imports from friends who come in every once in a while. Is this dvd not commercially available? If not and your serious I could give you a couple addresses in either Boston or SF area to drop off a copy if you happen to be near there and it would get here eventually .

the Shoreline DVD _is_ commercially available, and if you have contacts in the Boston area, i am 100% certain it's carried by Newbury Comics

Excellent, Maybe I can get my mom to pick up a copy and send it out for my birthday. The waiting is the hardest part but if this is the show I think it is, it'll be well worth it. Thanks for the info guys.

Hey Cush, not to derail this thread, but i'm going to anyway: thanks for the Ventura 7/22/84 recommendation the other night. I believe I used to have the tape, but it was lost long ago and forgotten. Well, it is indeed a tremendous show and I am very happy that it was brought back to life in my collection. Many thanks, indeed.

OK, back the original topic.

PS. HAPPY BIRTHDAY

heh.. good way of thinking. Ill remember that.. funny though, i've posted some things here (that I subsequently don't remember) but I still left it even when i felt compelled to delete them.

Every song on 1990 Shoreline is played with an energetic aura beside each song. it's just nuts.

Jerry always shined a lot brighter with JGB in the latter years... But that has all been discussed before...

JGB was the goods - Melvin a little lazy (just look at him still playing under the JGB name) - if u havn't explored alot of JGB u should start - thinking about alot of your posts I think u would love the stuff - I used to enjoy the JGB shows more than the boys - maybe somebody here can lead you to a Moosic,PA show (summer of 84?) - a big tent in the middle of a dirt field in the middle of nowhere in Pa - first 4 tunes (maybe out of order) That's what love will make you do, They love, Love in the Afternoon, ??????.
Anyway - they are all just pure Jer.

Hey, Max, don't bother making a connection between number of views and number of responses being any kind of direct reflection of the quality of the post or anyone's opinion of the poster. Like Cliff points out, there may only be a few folks here, several of which are probably the same person.
In reply to the post itself, yes it is an outstanding DVD. A personal fave of mine is the Truckin' Up To Buffalo DVD. Some really good Jerry stuff there (but, yes, Bobby is sporting "The Shorts" and the Izod).

I wasn't a big fan of the truckin up to buffalo setlist.. the all along the watchtower>dew>NFA was reeeally sick though :).. the cold rain and snow was alright..the terrapin was heart wrenching. I dunno.. maybe I should watch it more.
